Q1 – What is the name of your latest project? Tell us more about why you embarked on this project. If a writer, share your synopsis.

My latest project is in spreading the gift of laughter – www.laughoutloud.life. I believe that if people paused long enough to be in the moment and laugh, more would be happy. Laughter does so many wonderful things for both the mind and body and it is such an easy way for people to embark on a journey of wellness. My book series, while being a comedic adventure, is layered with messages of self growth and empowerment too. On a grander scale the project is RethinkFIT, and that has been put in place to help people realize that they can love better how they think, feel, act, look and dream.

Q2 – What inspired you when you encountered struggles along the way?

Struggles are also opportunities for new lessons and self growth. The inspiration when “speed bumps” present themselves is keeping the focus on the vision and goal, and leave the how to the universe!

Q3 – Have you ever traveled as research for your work/project/story?

Yes and no lol. I have recounted scenes in my story based on travels I had and there have been a few places that I went back to specifically to take in the scenery and overall feel, or to have specificity with the description.

Q4 – How has your lived experience influenced your work/project/story?

Completely, while the story is a laugh out loud comedy, it is the wisdom, information and insights that I gained over the course of my career in the fitness, wellness and empowerment industries that has greatly impacted the deeper message in the book series.

Q5 – What do you want readers to take away from your work/project/story?

To enjoy life. To be happy. To go with the flow and approach everyday as a magical adventure to enjoy!

Q6 – Do you believe books can inspire social change? How?

Absolutely. Books provide the opportunity to share new ideas, new ways of looking at things and to ideally give someone that “aha” moment. Change begins one person at a time and that is my goal.

Q7 – Anton Chekhov said, “The world is, of course, nothing but our conception of it.” What is your opinion of this statement? How does it coincide or conflict with your perspective of the world?

It is absolutely true, in fact, one of my favourite quotes is: “when you change the way you look at things the things you look at change”. Each one of us, in every moment, and with every decision, is co-creating the world around us. What you focus on is what becomes your reality.

Q8 – What personal experience had the greatest influence on your worldview?

My wife and I helped pioneer and launch the natural bodybuilding movement and events known as fitness model search. We did this through a world tour of competitions, showcases and workshops, expos, television shows, magazines and online communities. What we noticed is that most people put all their focus just on the outward appearance of the body and forgot about everything else. Being FIT is so much more than just strength and appearance… it’s about mental, emotional, social, spiritual and functional health too. Once we discovered this we decided that more people need to understand it. So it has had a huge impact on our desire to help people “wake up” and be the change.

Q9 – What perspectives or beliefs have you challenged in your work/project/story?

The very notion of what fitness is all about. In most cases fitness has nothing to do with wellness, and at the same time, wellness doesn’t always mean fit. So it is a blending of the two that is key. Most just spend their time on what they can see on the outside and it really needs to be much deeper than that.

Q10 – How do you see the relationship between writing and culture? How about the boundaries between fiction and reality?

I think that writing, creating books, movies, podcasts, etc influences culture. The line between fiction and reality is really based on beliefs… what is reality? It is a construct of your belief system and what you focus on. I am not suggesting that you can just believe you can fly and go for it, as that could really hurt lol… however too many are programmed to believe that reality is a specific way, when it can be so much more than that. I think that mindset is key.

Q11 – Aldous Huxley said, “I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself.” How have you changed throughout your creative process? How do you improve yourself every day?

Everyday is a new adventure. There is an expression – most people change long enough to to get the results they want, and then they go back to doing what they did before. True change, true transformation, needs to come from within. That also means to be open to being a continual student and letting go of ego and being able to understand that “I don’t know what I don’t know” and be open to letting go and looking at things differently.

Q12 – To what extent can fiction affect or improve the developments in science and technology in human life? What about religion and politics?

Fiction provides a new perspective, a new way of looking at things and fresh ideas. That is key to developments in science, tech, religion, politics, etc.

Q13 – Eckhart Tolle said, “Awareness is the greatest agent for change.” In your opinion, what is the next step and how can writers affect this?

Yes, the awareness that we are spiritual being, living here in this “Earth School” with the purpose to fully enjoy and experience the world. The key, though, is awareness is only the opening, it is what is done with that new aha. That’s where the magic lives!

Q14 – Intolerance and divisiveness are prevalent across the globe. Our voice may not be loud enough to right every wrong, but it is enough to make a difference one person at a time. Small acts move mountains. What one thing would you ask your audience to do to help inspire social change?

To love themselves. That sounds simple however most people do not take the time to fully embrace self love, which means they may lack self care, which means their degree of being happy, healthy and whole is diminished. I think laughter, truly laughing, allows someone to be in that state of creativity, love, imagination… well that all leads to self care, which leads to self love!

Q15 – Pick 1-3 social issues that are most important to you. Explain why you picked these and how we can help raise awareness/impact change.

  1. Being FIT – well, as I shared above, it is key to being happy! It is the basis of the last 25+ years in my career and it is a message I continue to share.
  2. Freedom – I think most people give away their freedoms by just following what they are told or see around them. If more wake up and realize the power is within them, then so many wonderful things can happen.
  3. Thoughts – Thoughts are powerful. Images turn into thoughts, thoughts then create emotions, emotions are based on experiences which then turn into frequencies in the body… this than turns into chemicals and hormones released by the brain which manifest into physical matter. Thoughts are important, so choose wisely, every moment, everyone has the ability to make that decision.

Q16 – Maya Angelou said, “I did then what I knew how to do, but now that I know better, I do better.” We have all made choices that we regret. We are all flawed humans. Together, we are experiencing this human story unfolding. Share a transformative experience where you learned from a mistake. How do you actively choose to make better choices?

When we first began hosting physique events we thought we were doing the right thing. Providing opportunity, pathways and platforms for people to transform and inspire others. In fact, we positively impacted millions of people around the world with our tours, events, television shows and magazines. When we realized it was more than that, we stopped it all. We also knew that to change things we had to approach it from a different mindset and level of awareness. So we spent close to a decade with mentors, guides, coaches in all areas from NLP to becoming Metaphysical Ministers and so much in between. We had to change first and now we are helping to empower people in a more expansive and transformative way with the goal of helping people be happy!
